Belgium Maternal Leave

An employee is entitled 15 weeks maternity leave. If there are multiple births, maternity leave will be 17 weeks but also can be extended 19 weeks. Maternity leave taken after childbirth is postnatal leave. Before the birth, days of taken is called prenatal leave. Prenatal leave must be taken 6 weeks and 7 days before the expected date of delivery. The postnatal leave can be extended maximum 5 weeks. Postnatal leave must be taken minimum 9 weeks. During the maternity leave, mutual fund and a maternity allowance calculated according to remuneration;

  • during the first 30 days , it is 82% of the uncapped salary
  • from the 31st day and in the event of an extension, it is 75% of the capped salary. Breastfeeding leave is also ensured. It lasts half an a hour. If the work hours less than 7.30/day, breastfeeding break will be once. If the work hours more than 7.30/day, the break will be twice. The breastfeeding breaks for up to 9 months after delivery. The breaks are not remunerated but it will be compensation paid by mutual fund.
